openVisaar: Enriching Cooperative Visualization by Combining Open Technologies

In this paper we present a new visualization framework called openVisaar. Our client-server framework is mainly based on the portable scenegraph system OpenSG. For remote visualization the MP4Live server is used on each client node of the cluster to encode ISO-compliant MPEG-4 video streams in real-time. The encoded video streams are multicast from each cluster client node to the remote application with Real Time Streaming Protocol (RTSP) and by use of an Apple Darwin Streaming Server or an Apache Webserver. For displaying the three dimensional scenes at the remote site only an ISO-compliant MPEG-4 video player software is needed to decode the video stream. By supporting remote video streams spatially separated working partners have the possibility of synchronous collaboration with our visualization system. For navigation and interaction at the remote site openVisaar offers different client software. We implemented a Java based client program that is executable on all operating systems with installed Java Runtime Environment (JRE) and provide an ISO-compliant MPEG-4 video player software. Navigation and collaborative interaction in openVisaar can be enhanced with an additional Augmented Reality support. For the Augmented Reality features of our framework we utilize the ARToolkit. Therefore a platform depended client software was developed that combines the ARToolkit functionality with the video functionality of the remote client. In the whole openVisaar Framework only components that can be used freely for non commercial purposes are integrated.
